Answer provided by Jack A. Edwards, Deputy Chief, Wildlife Protection Devision. (1997)
According to Title 14, California Code of Regulations, Section 354(c), for the taking of big game, hunting arrows and crossbow bolts with a broadhead type blade which will not pass through a hole seven-eights inch in diameter shall be used.
One brand quite often asked about is the PUNCHCUTTER. This is a brand name for a specialized broadhead arrow that allows the the blades of the broadhead to fold up within the diameter of the shaft of the arrow and expand upon impact.
Since the broadhead is less than seven-eigts of an inch in dieameter when released, it is not legal to use for big game hunting. The fact that they expand to greater than the minimum requirement upon impact, that is if they always work, does not meet the requirements. They must be 7/8" or more at all times.
There are other brands, but the bottom line is that they must meet the legal requirements prior to being released.
