JERRY BROWN PDF Print E-mail

I have been asked to comment on the up-coming CA gubernatorial election: Of the Republican candidate, an immensely wealthy woman named Whitman, I know nothing except that she is alleged to be anti-gun by some people who claim to know and that the allegation is not surprising to anyone.

SPECIFICS: Whitman recently gave an interview to the SF Chronicle in which it reported her as believing "tough gun laws like assault weapon bans and handgun control [i.e., banning them] are appropriate for California." Under her stewarship of E-Bay it adopted a policy of refusing to advertise gun or ammo sales.

Whitman has no interest in meeting w/ gun groups to solicit their support; Whitman has supported Barbara Boxer; Whitman supports "environmental" lawsuits that are anti-hunting but makes no attempt to gain the aid of gun groups on environmental issues.

In contrast, I do know Jerry Brown. We went to law school together though we were not big buddies. And when I contacted him about supporting the pro-2d Am position in the McDonald case, he filed an influential pro-2d Am brief w/ the S Ct. I know that he personally made the decision to do this, overruling his staff; and he wrote the brief himself. (He is an able lawyer.) When he was assailed by anti-gun forces, his response was that the 2d am is a "civil rights issue."

This is not to say that Brown is "pro-gun."He just thinks – as does everyone rational and informed on the issue – that gun control does not help reduce crime; indeed, that it has nothing to do w/ crime.

Based on the foregoing, I unreservedly recommend Jerry Brown for CA governor.

If I were a one issue voter this might sway me, but larger issues remain in the forefront. We have a corrupt state legislature totally in the hands of the state employee unions. Our unfunded liabilities for state employees retirement and health care are approaching $110 Billion. Join the Howard Jarvis tax payer association to keep an eye on their latest schemes to relieve you of your hard earned monies. Thanks for the heads up on her gun control stance. I'll have to research Meg's views in that area.

I am in possession of an email from Steve Poizner that says he "is a supporter of the Second Amendment and opposes any attempts to chip away at the right that every Californian has to keep and bear arms. Steve believes that the Founders of the Constitution were crystal clear when establishing that people have the right to own guns for both recreational and defensive purposes. The Commissioner strongly opposed the recent signing of the ammunition bill, AB 962. His thoughts regarding the issue can be found at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCdInwNVtks" Perhaps we should start thinking about someone besides Meg Whitman and Jerry Brown.

You need to get the facts straight. I called meg whitmans campaign and they said that she belives the gun laws on the books should be kept and no more added. This was stated This week by her campaign. Jerry brown did file an amicus brief individually to the SCOTUS rather than join many other attorney generals. The REAL reason Jerry Brown his brief this way is because the other attorney generals reason was that the 2nd amendment should apply to California just like it should apply to Texas, Idaho, and the other fifty two states. Jerry Brown feels that California is a special state and that it's citizens 2nd amendment rights should be more enforced than that in other states.

Jerry Brown is a leftist liberal. High taxation, anti death penalty. Social Liberal. I find it hard to believe that he is pro gun. Even if he was, it's not the only issue to contemplate when voting. I refuse to vote for ANY liberal regardless of what he claims to be. Just look at Obama.

Too bad for Meg. She would have had my vote as I believe she is well suited for the job. I refuse however to support anyone that does not respect the 2nd am. It's just THAT important to me.

I hope you are kidding; but I guess if comes down to Brown or Whitman then I'll suck it up and take the lessor of two evils - but Brown??? Have you forgotten how horrible he was the first go around? We are still paying through the nose for stuff he enacted way back then!!!

I don't care what party he is. Can we get back to the constitution? Can we get back to HAVING rights instead of taking them away?

There was a time when Americans CHOSE to do the right thing because we had a strong culture with strong moral and ethical values. Now politicians steal our rights away, left and right, by appealing to our desire to force others to our belief systems. We have replaced morals with laws and freedom with nosy-neighbor syndrome. If JB wants to return some of MY freedoms, he's my man. Whitman can suck eggs until she remembers the documents this country was founded on; same for any politician regardless of party.

Party means nothing now.

Also would love some references so I can research this myself. Everything I have found says Meg is against more gun control.
