WWII IN A SONG PDF Print E-mail
Written by Don B. Kates

As WWII's veterans die off, their noble traditions die too. Among the losses are innumerable songs. This memorandum is written to preserve two of them, however briefly.

I.    The song that sustained our men through the darkest and most heroic hours of the Battle of the Bulge:

Hitler has only got one ball
Goebbels has two but very small,
Himmler is something similar,
But poor old Goering has no balls at all.

NOTE: In the interest of historical accuracy I have reversed the positions of Goebbels and Goering in the original song: In fact, Goebbels' wife fulfilled the Nazi ideal by bearing him a child every year. (When the two of them eventually committed suicide in the Bunker, they also killed several of their small children.)

Far from being balless, as Minister of Propaganda, Goebbels controlled the movie industry and he was constantly boffing various  actresses. When he wanted to divorce his wife to marry one of them, Hitler forbade it because of Frau G's status as Germany's leading childbearing frau.

On the other hand, mid-war German rumors alleged fat old Goering was unable to impregnate his wife and another man had had to be brought in to perform the required service. Hitler fired Streicher as editor of DERSTURMER for referring to this rumor.

II.    The stationing of large numbers of GIs in England in the build-up for D-Day caused much tension between the Allies. The GIs were well-paid and well fed in comparison to British troops. This made the GIs attractive dates for British women.  Thousands of British women eventually married GIs and accompanied them back to the U.S. after the war.

The unhappy British troops deprecated the GIs as "over-paid, over-fed and over here." The GIs replied that British troops were "under-paid, under-fed and under Eisenhower." When the two groups met in pubs it was not unusual to find the GIs serenading the English with the following --song in a faux-Cockney accent:

I don't want a bullet up me arsehole,
I don't want me bollocks shot away,
I'd rather stay in England,
Lovely, lovely England, And fornicate the friging war away.
