Books about the Civil War are legion. When I was young, Bruce Catton published a 3 volume history of the Army of the Potomac which is classic. James McPherson has a series of fine studies of various aspects of the war and an excellent recent bio of Lincoln. Douglas Freeman has a multi-volume bio of Lee which is well regarded (I cant say more, having never read it.) There are numerous bios of many other Civil War figures including an excellent bio of Sherman (no, he was not actually crazy, but he was damned peculiar; inter alia his marriage was years delayed because he wouldn't agree even to just visit Ohio where he was raised -- his wife spent her confinements there w/ her parents) by Lee Kennett and Cooper's fine recent bio of Jefferson Davis. It shows the tragedy of a fine man whose life was doomed by his advocacy of the atrocity of slavery. It also demolishes the years of false claims that the War was about anything other than slavery.

[Preface: On looking over what I have written below, it occurs to methat readers may think I am either being humorous or just dissinglibertarians. NO! I am being perfectly serious in pointing out a hugeproblem for people whom I generally like and respect.]
For decades I have known libertarians, some quite well. As a group theyare highly intelligent and articulate w/ interesting, provocative andoften persuasive, ideas. Many are computer geeks. They are almost all male and often very lonely. The loneliness isbecause the vast majority of females of comparable intelligence andinterests will not give them the time of day. Note: I do not mean thesewomen disagree w/ them or dislike them. The women consider themuntouchables.

If only because it is so much in the news, I have thought a bit about the immigration problem, and come to conclusions which I fear will disappoint and dismay many of you. [NOTE: it should be recognized that there are economists who conclude that, with all aspects considered, illegal immigration produces a net economic gain for the U.S. I have neither the knowledge nor the expertise to evaluate this. The present essay is written on the assumption that illegal immigration produces a net economic loss for the U.S.]

Do murders by females differ markedly from those by males? One might think not from reading Henry H. Brownstein's summary of a killing described to him by a woman whom he interviewed in a New York prison ["Women Who Kill in Drug Market Situations," 12 JUSTICE Q. 473, 482-83 (1995)]:
Originally [respondent] had her own business selling drugs on the street, and felt safe in her belief that being on the street made it easy to get away if the police came. One day, when she was short of money and was looking for a way to make some, a bigger dealer offered her an opportunity to work for him selling crack from an apartment. She disliked inside selling [in part] because ... she feared the beatings workers faced when they were accused (rightly or wrongly) of "messing up the money." Still the bigger dealer was insistent and she needed the money.

A couple of years ago I wrote the following in response to an L.A. TIMES article which described and endorsed the misleading nonsense being propagated as history in L.A. public schools.
The most ironic thing about this pseudo-history is that, though it comes from Latino activists, it is just another version of white people’s history. Think back to what you were taught in public schools about the history of the world -- That from the time of Columbus on, history consisted of the technologically superior white man overcoming immense odds to conquer large parts of the rest of the world. The Latino pseudo-history portrayed in the L.A. TIMES article is just another example of the same whites-conquer-primitive-darker-skinned- people garbage. The only difference is that instead of these conquests being spun as a good thing they are now spun as a bad thing. But the history is still misrepresented as just being a matter of white conquerors defeating primitive native peoples.
